The Grocery Bore

The grocery store exhausts me. Usually when I walk in I have high expectations and I usually walk out feeling like I got nothing and discouraged. I know this sounds strange, but I don't really know what to buy at the grocery store. I don't really know how to plan for the whole week and buy things that will make my food fresh and tasty. Since I'm a veggie, I have to count all the meat out too. I buy lots of fruit and vegetables, but I get lost in the rest of the aisles. I can never remember everything I need, but I rarely write a list. I wander aimlessly through the aisles and bounce back and forth from aisle ten and the produce, always forgetting something in between. Since I bounce all around the grocery store, I keep running into the same people. I feel like people think I am stalking them or something. Either you start at the same aisle as another person and they become your silent grocery partner, always fumbling to get past one another and awkwardly grabbing something as you say "Excuse me" for the 4th time or you jot around the all the aisles like a frantic shopper. It seems like there is always a family that is really loud and the kids just scream and roam looking for chocolate cream puffs. I try to avoid these people in the aisles, but they always seem to catch up with me. The kids scream, the mom screams, the kid cries, the mom screams some more. AHH.

After work my concentration is pretty much shot, so I just stand there staring at the soup, bread, and veggie prices...unable to make a decision. Is this just me, or do others experience this? I feel like I really need to learn about some good recipes and get some variation into my cooking. Is this something that gets better with time?

Just wondering if others feel like they just leave the store with snacks and nothing to eat? Usually when I come home I still have no idea what to cook. I guess this is part of growing up, learning how to plan meals for days at a time. I need help. Please share your easy recipes and advice on how to make this adult grocery transition.

P.S. I trashed the David Brent video...I thought it was time. Now you don't have to panic as you try to turn down your speakers at work.

sorry about the frustrations whit...maybe it all comes w/practice? i love the grocery, but i never buy for more than a few days/week b/c i need something a couple times a week anyway. i also love lists- as you know, so maybe if you just triiiied to make one throughout the week it would help? but i think w/time grocery shopping will get routine and you won't even have to think about it.

p.s. how about you add these to your list before the next time i visit:
flour
eggs
oatmeal
sugar
butter
salt
brown sugar
baking soda
vanilla
chocolate chips

...just a suggestion ;)

I find grocery shopping AWFUL unless I have specific recipes and events to cook for. I believe in lists. I seem to gravitate around the outside areas of the store...produce, dairy, bread, tortillas, fish, wine/beer, petfood. you know...the basics.
It's always good to have staples on hand like beans, rice, pasta (they'll never spoil)and canned tomato products, olive oil. I think a great service would be menu planning and shopping for those who hate it. Good luck!
Have you ever turned John loose in a grocery store?

First, I must say I am a list-making mofo. I have a very specific "staple" grocery list that we must have every week (salad, fruit, fish, bread, cheese, etc). Then I like to send Monte to go get it all-just to see the crazy stuff he brings home. He'll get all my list and then tons of stuff I never buy such as ice cream sandwiches, Doritos, candy bars, slim jims, etc. It makes grocery shopping fun for me just to see all of the funny and random things he picks up. So, make sure you make a list if you ever send John by himself!

Yeah, John has never gone by himself. I think he would freak out there trying to plan a week's worth of food. Something tells me if he goes shopping we will just eat chips and salsa all week and be forced to use beer instead of milk in cereal.

I, of course, agree with Keenan and Carolyn, a list is a must…of course at our age we frequently forget our lists which explains why our kids complain that the only thing in the refrigerator is beer and condiments. The coiments keep forever and are always there, the beer is the one thing we know we need!

Ok, I will start keeping better lists, but what should I put on them???!
